Blewbury Film – August 2019

June 3, 2019

Our late summer screening for Wednesday 7th August 2019 will be the multiple award winning period drama spoof, The Favourite. This is a rather unconventional costume drama to say the least!

The story is set in 18th Century England and centres on Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) as the enfeebled and eccentric monarch who prefers spending time with her rabbits than ruling her country. Her trusted advisor Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) would appear to do the ruling for her but, when this privileged position comes under threat from her status and wealth seeking cousin, Abigail Hill (Emma Stone), a battle royale commences!

The Favourite is directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos. He has produced a period drama like no other – not staid but contemporary, funny and with a sense of ironic, hilarious absurdity. It features daring and almost perfect performances from its three female stars and its list of accolades includes Academy, BAFTA and Golden Globe for best actress (Oliva Colman), BAFTA for best supporting actress (Rachel Weisz), BAFTA Best Costume Design (Sandy Powell) and BAFTA for Best British Independent Film (Yorgos Lanthimos) amongst many others.

“A delightful film: funny, absurd, anarchic and profound.”
