Blewbury Film

April 27, 2019

Our early summer screening for Wednesday 5th June 2019 will be Kenneth Lonergan’s award winning study of family ties and grief, Manchester By The Sea.

Casey Affleck stars as Lee Chandler, a guy who lives on his own in Boston, works as a janitor, is angry at the world and seethes with rage at himself.  Lee returns to his hometown after the death of his brother Joe to find, to his utter astonishment and disbelief, that he is now legal guardian of Joe’s teenage son.  Finding himself unexpectedly in charge of his seemingly selfish nephew, Patrick (Lucas Hedges), Lee wrestles with the ghosts of his past while attempting to deal with an unforeseen future for which no one believes him to be prepared – least of all himself. Lonergan’s deceptively intricate screenplay and Casey’s superb method acting produces an unforgettable and illuminating look at loss, grief and self-inflicted punishment – a powerful mix for an incredible film – that leaves us waiting to find out what made Lee so disillusioned.

The film won Academy Awards for Best Actor for Affleck and Best Original Screenplay for Lonergan, with additional nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Hedges), and Best Supporting Actress (Williams).  Affleck also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.
