Village Leaf Clearance: This year it is on Sunday afternoon, 27th November. Please meet us on the Play Close at 2 pm. We are running it with the help of the BVS and Parish Council. We all use the footpaths so please help us clear them of slippery leaves. Bring rakes and barrows if you have them, or you can borrow ours. There will be tea/coffee/juice and cake for volunteers afterwards at The Blueberry (who are kindly sponsoring the event).

Blewbury Garden Market Extra: A quick reminder that you can buy locally made bread and cakes for the weekend at the Post Office on Saturday mornings from 9.30 am – so call in before doing your weekly shop! Any unsold bread is put in the freezer so is available during the week as well. If you feel like occupying a couple of hours with baking on a Friday, bring your efforts along and we will sell them for you (10% retained, split between PO and SB). We also sell preserves and occasional produce (such as Jerusalem artichokes) all week.

Apple juicing: Sincere thanks to everyone who came along with their buckets of apples and saved this wonderful resource from being wasted by turning it into delicious juice! Thanks also to our team of volunteers, who spent many hours cleaning and preparing apples for the shredder and washing down the equipment afterwards. If you still have apples on your trees, you can hire our equipment for £10 – contact angela.hoy@sky.com.

Thermal imaging of houses: We will again be borrowing the Vale’s thermal camera in January in order to help people improve their home’s insulation. This can make it warmer, save money and reduce carbon emissions – a triple win. We image your house and provide a report free of charge. If you would like your house imaged, or re‑imaged to check improvements, please email us at info@sustainable-blewbury.org.uk or phone Jo Lakeland (850490) or Eric Eisenhandler (850558).

DID YOU KNOW? The Mulberry Tree is usually the last to come into leaf and traditionally country gardeners took it as a sign that they could not plant out free from the risk of a late frost until the buds of the mulberry had opened. Older gardeners still call the mulberry “the wise tree”.  Happy Gardening  Eileen

Blewbury Brass Band Thanksgiving Concert Saturday 26th November

Blewbury Brass Band will be holding a spectacular Thanksgiving Concert on Saturday 26th November at 7:30pm in Blewbury Village Hall.

The concert will feature our Main Band and our Learner Band and will include a traditional Sousa march, film and show favourites, beautiful cornet and horn solos and a Mexican classic! I have thrown out some challenges to the band in ‘Mack and Mabel’ and ‘Wild West’ and it has responded with great enthusiasm. We are all very excited about the concert and would like to see a sell-out audience.’

Blewbury Film Supports the Village Hall

After two years and ten screenings Blewbury Film has successfully covered its start-up costs and is now able to make its first contribution to the Village Hall Refurbishment Fund.

The Blewbury Film Team was very pleased to be able to present a cheque for £500 to Steve White for the Village Hall Fund. Thank you to everyone who has supported Blewbury Film so far – everyone who has bought tickets, helped out in any way or supported Blewbury Film – we look forward to seeing you at our future screenings.

For our winter screening Blewbury Film will be presenting a British Comedy based on a true story and starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant. “Old Houses, Warm Houses”, Wednesday 16th November at 8.00 pm, Blewbury Manor Barn:  A talk by Marianne Suhr, Historic Buildings Surveyor.

Marianne, who lives in Blewbury and is the author of ‘Old House Eco Handbook’, will guide homeowners through a variety of options to prepare for the winter months. She will discuss windows and doors, roofs and walls, and techniques for retrofitting older buildings whilst retaining historic fabric. She will focus on the recent renovation of Meers Parcel in Blewbury as an example. Tickets £6, including a glass of wine, available from Blewbury Post Office or on the door (if not sold out). All profits go to Blewbury Pre-school.

Apple juicing, Sunday 6 November, Manor Stable, 12–2 pm: Our last 2016 session for making delicious juice, good for a year. Bring your apples and screw-top glass wine-type bottles. Our equipment can also be hired: please contact angela.hoy@sky.com. For full details please see www.sustainable-blewbury.org.uk/events.htm.

Blewbury Garden Market Extra: Our Saturday stall at the Garage has now closed for the year – many thanks to our suppliers and purchasers for making it a success. During the coming months there will be bread and cake on sale at the Post Office on Saturday mornings from 9.30 am, and preserves and occasional produce all week. Please bring us anything you’d like to sell.

Thermal imaging of houses: We will be doing this again in January. If you would like your house imaged to check insulation, or re-imaged to check improvements, please email us at info@sustainable-blewbury.org.uk.

Community Orchard: Plans for the Tickers Folly orchard are well advanced. We’ve selected a variety of apples, pears, plums, cherries – and a few surprises! Once the trees are mature there should be fruit ripening throughout the season. Planting starts in November, a few at a time, and each tree will be protected against deer and rabbits. We’ll be calling on the services of the many people who have volunteered to help – be warned! If you have questions or would like to help, please contact John Ogden – jogden@blewbury.net. Note that the entire cost of the project is covered by a grant, so there is no cost to the village – and the fruit will be available to everybody!
