PROJECT RESOUND – MAY UPDATE

The Honeybee talk was an entertaining sell-out and the event overall raised £1835.

Thank you to everyone who came along, bought honey, other bee products and donated. The special edition Resound Borage Honey, one of the sweetest and tastiest of honeys, was a great bonus. Particular thanks go to our speaker and honey maker Rob Nickless and local business, Infineum, which match funded the monies raised at the event. Our fundraising total has now reached £44,158 (59%). Meanwhile, whilst our artists are busy selecting, cutting and treating the glass ready for the window, we are working on other activities.

Blewbury Local History Group

20th century wars caused so much grief not only worldwide but also here in villages like ours. The group is planning a walk on September 8th to remember the village lads who lost their life in WW2.

If you have memories or stories of those who served, or made the ultimate sacrifice, then do contact Mark, who will be leading the walk. At our next meeting we shall be planning the route and visitors will be welcome. We shall also be having our AGM, but don’t worry, it will be very short, so we have time for all our other history projects to be talked about.

Next meeting is Tuesday, May 14th at 8pm in the History Room, Parsonage Lane. Contacts: Mark at  markpalethorpe@talktalk.net or Audrey 850427 or audreyrosettalong@gmail.com.

Blewbury Croquet Club

BLEWBURY CROQUET CLUB CELEBRATES NATIONAL CROQUET DAY!

Bubbly & Cake: Come and celebrate National Croquet Day on Blewbury’s brilliant lawns! Have a go, learn what it’s like, and afterwards a glass of bubbly or cup of tea, and home-made cake. We think croquet’s the ideal sport – played by all ages, at your own walking pace out in the open air. A game of skill and strategy. Can you get your balls through the hoops and peg out before your opponent?

Blewbury Croquet Club is throwing open its lawns to everyone from 2pm on Sunday, 12th May, to try the game, with help from our expert coaches. No entry fee, no special clothing needed – but do wear flat shoes please, for the sake of the flat lawns. And a short follow-up coaching course is on offer to everyone who’d like to come again.

Croquet offers sport, friendships, fun, competition and a whole lot more. Come along and see for yourself what this game is about – just off the A417 in Blewbury, opposite Savages. For more details, call Paul Wolff on 01235 850520, email croquet@parabola.uk, or visit www.blewburycroquetclub.org.uk

Blewbury and Upton Village Produce Association

– Your Local Village Gardening Club

Don’t forget we have a day trip on:

SATURDAY 8th JUNE to THE VYNE. VYNE ROAD, SHERBORNE ST JOHN, BASINGSTOKE, RG24 9HL

The Vyne is a 16th century estate and country house.  Following its huge 2-year roof project, this former Tudor palace, a National Trust property, has re-opened, to tell the story of a Victorian brother and sister who saved it.

Full details of the time and transport arrangements will be available with Karen at Blewbury Post Office or contact Maggie Maytham in Upton (01235 850126).

THE SUMMER SHOW SCHEDULE will be in the Blewbury post office from May onwards or you can get it online by emailing Eileen on vpa.in.bl.up@gmail.com  or by ringing Margaret in Upton on 01235 850126. This is an opportunity for you to show off your skills – growing fruit, flowers and vegetables, or cooking, or handicraft or photography.   You don’t have to be an expert and it’s great fun taking part.  There’s also a Childrens’ Section, so hopefully we will have a few more junior exhibitors taking part this year.

DID YOU KNOW ? The apple can grow at the highest latitude of all the fruits. Apple trees need almost 1,000 hours of cold autumn and winter air to produce their flowers, which explains why they cannot be grown in hotter climates. The apple was the earliest to be cultivated by man and, like so many other plants, it was introduced to Britain by the Romans.  Today, China is the world’s leading apple producer.”  Happy Gardening. Sustainable Blewbury

Sustainable jet fuel from rubbish – how does that work?

A talk by Dr. Neville Hargreaves, Mon. 1st April, 8.00 pm in the Melland Room, Blewbury Clubhouse

Reducing the rapidly growing greenhouse gas emissions from aviation is tougher than for any other form of transport. Neville is working with British Airways and others on an exciting project to build the UK’s first commercial sustainable jet-fuel plant. It will convert huge amounts of household waste into jet fuel, thus avoiding putting it into landfill or incinerating it, and reducing emissions. He will describe how the process works, what it can do for the environment, and the practical challenges of bringing a really big industrial project to fruition.
Tickets £4 from the Post Office or on the door (if not sold out); drinks available from the bar.

Hedge laying

We have finished our hedge laying activities for the year, to avoid disturbing nesting birds. We’ve completed 190 metres along the footpath towards Upton. The last 10 metres, near the village, were bare so we planted hawthorn to complete the field boundary. As always, though pleased with the results we do wait nervously to see how well the hedge recovers. All our previous efforts have resulted in strong regrowth and a much healthier hedge, so fingers crossed with this one. Many thanks to the volunteers who came along to take part in reviving a country craft. We would welcome any suggestions of hedges that could benefit from being laid next season.

Blewbury Film

Blewbury Film is pleased to announce that its first screening of the year on Wednesday 10th April 2019 will be the brilliant British comedy,  The Death of Stalin.

An irreverent tilt on Soviet-era political satire, this is a sulphurous black comedy about the intrigue and plots going on behind the scenes in the Kremlin following the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953.

The film is superbly cast and acted, with icy and ruthless force by an A-list line-up. There are no weak links; each cast member has a plum role and squeezes every gorgeous (but horrible) comedic drop out of their part. Michael Palin is outstanding as Molotov, the pathetic functionary with the kindly unhappy face who has long since sacrificed his marriage and self-respect on the altar of Stalinism.

The film is written and directed by Armando Iannucci, and co-written by David Schneider, Ian Martin and Peter Fellows. Armando Iannucci turns Soviet style horror into comedy in this eccentric shocker about a strong man and his world of banishment, blood and blundering.
