The VPA – Your local village gardening club

On Saturday 9th July we held our 69th Annual Show. Although the number of entrants was down on last year, standard of entries was as good as ever, despite the strange spring and early summer weather we had. Well done to those who took part and thank you to everyone who helped to make the event such a success.

PLEASE NOTE: Our garden visit scheduled for the 4th September has been postponed until the spring because many people who want to attend are still on holiday.

Below is the remainder of our programme for 2016. We look for to seeing you at these events.

SUN. 23rd OCT PLANT SALE AT THE RED LION PUB, BLEWBURY 1.00pm – 3.00pm with Sustainable Blewbury’s Apple Day
WED. 2nd NOV ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – The Vale Room 7.00pm

DID YOU KNOW? Caterpillars can devastate a crop of cabbages like a biblical plague of locusts, but you can help protect younger plants by adding about half a tablespoon of salt to your watering can. The plants absorb the salt, making them unpleasant for caterpillars who bloat and die if they consume it, but the cabbages will have expunged the salt by the time they reach maturity.          Happy Gardening  Eileen

What wonderful weather we have had for croquet! The club is doing very well in the various leagues we enter. In the SCF, Northern Division, Golf Croquet Handicap League we have won 5 out of 6 the matches and may well win. Subject to confirmation we have won SCF B Level Advanced Association Croquet League by the cunning ploy of luring the Oxford Uni team to play at Blewbury where they were baffled by our fast, flat lawns!

Two open association croquet tournaments have been held, the Blewbury & Phyllis Court tournament, won by Blewbury’s Andy Robertson and the Blewbury & Harwell tournament won by Noel Harris of Eynsham. Blewbury also won against the Watford touring team in the usual Association friendly match. The Golf croquet players also play several friendly matches against other clubs.

Coming up in the near future we have the AC Autumn Doubles on 10 September, the invitation Founder’s Cup match on 17 September and the AGM on 25 September to round off the main playing season.

For details of the club, and our club events, please see our website www.blewburycroquetclub.org.uk. Or contact June Wolff 01235 851567, june@wolff.co.uk

Blewbury Film

Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay play a long-time married couple in Andrew Haigh’s assured and compassionately shaded drama, “45 Years”.

The film, depicting retirees very much in love but questioning their relationship in the run-up to their 45th wedding anniversary, ventures into fresh ground in an assured and mature way. This brilliant character study of lives thrown off-kilter by an expanding surprise looks at whether secrets can really be survived and which is better, the knowing, or the not knowing. Haigh’s film keeps these questions alive until literally its last shot, and leaves them to jangle their way through you for days afterwards – superb. The film’s delicate pacing, brilliantly modulated characters coupled with superlative performances from both Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay have produced much acclaim and excellent critical review. It is a British “indie” film made up of small moments which provides huge rewards and produces a truly an unmissable performance.
