On Christmas Day William (Bill) Dent-Robinson celebrated his 105th birthday.
Originally from Cumbria, William came south to go to Reading University and in 1933 took up a teaching post at Didcot Co-educational Secondary School where he met his future wife, Winifred, who taught Mathematics. In 1936 he joined the newly built St Birinus Secondary Modern School for Boys and is the sole surviving member of the original staff. He has lived in the village for 70 years.
During the Second World War, William served in the Royal Air Force. He undertook wireless interception and intelligence work near the front line in Europe and took part in the D-Day landings. In 1946 he returned to St Birinus as Head of the Geography Department. He was acting Headmaster for a year and for two decades was Deputy Headmaster. He retired in 1973. There are a huge number of his ex-pupils who live in and around Blewbury who remember ‘Robbie’ with great affection and hold him in very high regard.
