9. Jacob Macdonald was vicar from 1836 until
his death in 1871. He long remained a legend with his remarkable histrionic
abilities in the three-decker pulpit shown in No. 8.
Jacob Macdonald always preached in his black gown and changed into this
in the Lady Chapel, then the vestry, where a convenient decanter of sherry
stood ready to fortify him for his hour-long sermon. His dramatisations
of some of the Old Testament stories were long remembered and many shrank
from his accusing finger. He was the last of the old-time parsons.
